The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) participated in the eighth meeting of the Joint High-Level Technical Committee on Water and Agriculture under the League of Arab States, held in Cairo on the sidelines of Cairo Water Week 2026. The meeting brought together representatives of Arab countries and regional and international organisations working in the water and agriculture sectors.

The meeting reviewed progress in implementing the action plan for the 2019 Cairo Declaration and discussed regional initiatives aimed at strengthening water and food security, improving the efficiency of water allocation for agriculture, and promoting the safe reuse of treated wastewater. Discussions also highlighted the role of geospatial technologies and remote sensing in addressing data gaps and supporting informed decision-making amid growing water scarcity and climate change challenges.

Participants also discussed ways to strengthen institutional coordination between the water and agriculture sectors, build technical capacity, and advance the implementation of regional guidelines to support integrated and sustainable water resources management across Arab countries.

On the sidelines of the meeting, CEDARE representatives held discussions with regional partner organisations, including the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), and the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA). These discussions focused on strengthening cooperation, exchanging expertise, and exploring opportunities to develop joint regional initiatives and programmes in sustainable water resources management, capacity building, and the application of innovative technologies to enhance water and food security.

CEDARE’s participation reflects its continued commitment to strengthening institutional partnerships, promoting cooperation among Arab, regional and international organisations, and supporting joint initiatives to address shared water and food security challenges and advance sustainable development across the Arab region.
